Parliament has approved an ambitious infrastructure development program worth K2.5 trillion, set to transform transportation networks and public facilities across Zambia. The comprehensive package includes highway construction, bridge projects, and modernization of public buildings in urban and rural areas.

The infrastructure initiative represents the largest single investment in the nation's physical development, with projects distributed across all ten provinces to ensure equitable development and improved connectivity throughout the country.

Major Projects Included

The approved projects include the construction of 2,500 kilometers of new roads, rehabilitation of existing highways, and the building of 45 major bridges to improve access to remote communities. Urban development projects will modernize city centers and improve public transportation systems in Lusaka, Kitwe, and Livingstone.

Rural electrification programs and water infrastructure projects are also part of the package, aimed at improving living standards and supporting economic activities in underserved areas. The projects are expected to create over 50,000 direct jobs and stimulate growth in local economies.

Implementation Timeline

Construction is scheduled to begin in phases over the next six months, with priority given to projects that address critical infrastructure gaps. The government has committed to transparent procurement processes and regular progress reporting to ensure accountability and efficient use of resources.
